How to prepare walls for painting

How to prepare walls for painting

While it can be tempting to get painting as soon as possible when you want to decorate a room, it’s worth taking the time to make sure your room and surfaces are best prepared before you begin. Getting the preparation right is crucial to achieving the perfect finish. It’ll also help to keep things neater and cleaner, and reduce the need for additional coats of paint. No paint can completely cover dirty or uneven surfaces, so tackling this at the start of the project avoids the need for extra work later on.

In this guide we’ll walk you through the most important steps to take, and show you how to;

  • Empty your room ready for decorating, and protect fixtures and fittings you aren't painting
  • Clean your walls to help paint adhere
  • Fill holes and cracks and smooth your walls for the best possible finish
  • Prime stained surfaces or those which have not been painted before

Once you've completed these tasks you should have a smooth, even surface ready to be painted.

If you're painting on bare wood, plaster or metal surfaces, you'll get a better result if you use a primer first. It provides a surface which the paint can bond to and stops the paint being absorbed. Find out more what you need and for what surface.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it says .... Excellent product, lovely thick consistency, goes on very well, superb coverage, only drawback is the smell which we're not so used too with modern paints so need good ventilation. Highly recommended ... and of course as with any paint you need to check first whether it's for interior or exterior usage!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It does what it says on the tin! This is a good product and acts as a very good undercoat/primer. You must make sure you give it a good stir otherwise you'll wonder where the colour has gone!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well Some people are wary of water-based paint but this one's fine. I've used it as u/coat for many years both inside and out with a single top-coat of non-drip oil-based paint and the combination works very well. Although it has quite a thick feel to it when you load the brush it paints quicker than you might expect and you might wonder about the coverage but it all dries to a very even matt finish. And quickly too. (If using it as a primer on patches of bare wood it can look a bit 'thin' when dry so I apply a second priming coat before getting stuck in.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible I bought this undercoat, when I opened it at the weekend it was like cloudy water. I had to get a long spoon and mix it on doing so it looked abit more like paint. On putting the paint into brush it looked transparent !! (never seen undercoat like it), i applied it to the skirting board añd you couldnt even see where i had painted and marks that was on skirting hadn't even been covered. In the end I dìd 2 coats of gloss, very disappointed by it, especially as I bought it online so not as many options for undercoat that isn't expensive. Wouldn't buy again,

Rated 1 out of 5 by from White Primer I used this on some new pine skirting board, but the coverage was very poor, and it failed to cover the pine colour.
